Reported speech
When we report another's words, we use direct speech with quotation marks or reported speech. In reported speech, the tenses, word order and pronouns may be different from those in the original sentence.
e.g. Dr Panda asked MoMo, "What is the first cloned mammal in the world?"
>> Dr Panda asked MoMo what the first cloned mammal in the world was.
In reported speech:
present simple → past simple present perfect → past perfect
past simple → past perfect past continuous → past perfect continuous
