It follows the lives of four sisters - Meg, Jo, Beth and Amy March - from childhood to womanhood, tracing their personal growth and relationships. The story is loosely based on the author's and her three sisters' lives. Alcott wrote two sequels to Little Women, which are Little Men and Jo's Boys.
