Talk of the town : Establishment of Primary Healthcare Commission
【明報專訊】The Health Bureau has announced the establishment of the Primary Healthcare Commission. Legislation will be drafted to grant the commission statutory powers in defining, reviewing, and supervising providers of primary healthcare services.
What is primary healthcare?
There are three tiers in a well-functioning healthcare system: primary healthcare (primary), hospital and specialist care (secondary), and specialized care (tertiary).
Primary healthcare serves as the initial point of contact for individuals and families in their healthcare journey within the community. The primary system plays a pivotal role in promoting community health by enabling early detection and treatment of mild cases through family doctors.
The healthcare system in Hong Kong faces several challenges, including an aging population, an overloaded public medical healthcare system, and an increasing prevalence of chronic diseases.
Recognized as an essential component, the primary healthcare system forms the foundation of the healthcare service pyramid in a well-functioning healthcare system.
