¡i©ú³ø±M°T¡jThe Incident The Education Bureau posted on January 24 an article on its official website which says Cantonese is not an official language. It says, ''Although the Basic Law provides that Chinese and English are the two official languages in Hong Kong, nearly 97% of local people learn Cantonese (a Chinese dialect (¤è¨¥) that is not an official language) as their commonly used daily language.'' The article has aroused suspicions that the government tries to have Cantonese replaced with putonghua. The article, which had attracted severe criticism, was removed on February 2. The debate on language actually began in 2007, when people discussed whether Chinese Language classes should be taught in Cantonese or putonghua at local schools.
