We use "am/are/is going to" to talk about plans in the future. Similarly, we may use the past form of this structure (was/were going to) to talk about future plans you made in the past.
e.g. We are going to play football next Sunday.
e.g. I was going to call him, but I forgot.
e.g. Last month you said you were going to quit your job. Have you changed your mind?
