【明報專訊】Pride and prejudice almost ruined the love between Elizabeth Bennet and Fitzwilliam Darcy. Mr Darcy refused to dance with Elizabeth during social gatherings. Elizabeth often described him as the last man in the world whom she would marry. Luckily, they gradually built trust and love and cleared away misunderstandings between them. Jane Austen finished writing the original version of Pride and Prejudice (《傲慢與偏見》) in 1797 when she was 21. Like some other famous writers, she had difficulties finding a publisher for her works, until Thomas Egerton bought the copyright of the novel and published it for her - for just £110! Though she wrote romances, she never got married. She once rejected a man's proposal (求婚) because she was not in love with him.
