[2024.11.13] 發表

【明報專訊】The complex of the Central Police Station in the Central District, commonly known as "Tai Kwun", has been deteriorating since the collapse of the married inspector's quarters (the fourth building) eight years ago. The building, including the components from the roof to the first floor, has been dismantled and remains unrepaired.

What is conservation?

Conservation is the comprehensive process of safeguarding a site to preserve its cultural significance. This encompasses maintenance and, depending on circumstances, preservation, restoration, reconstruction, and adaptation, often combining multiple approaches.

Preserving Hong Kong's Historic Buildings

The Antiquities and Monuments Office is responsible for heritage conservation and education efforts in the region, grading historical buildings based on their heritage importance. As of October 10, 2024, Hong Kong has 1444 registered historic buildings. By prioritizing conservation efforts, we can ensure that these architectural gems stand the test of time, continuing to enrich the cultural tapestry of Hong Kong for the next generations.

In Hong Kong, the preservation and adaptive reuse of historic buildings play a vital role in maintaining the cultural fabric of the city. Notable examples include:
