Talk of the town : Father of non-invasive prenatal testing
【明報專訊】Professor Dennis Lo Yuk-ming, known as "Father of non-invasive prenatal testing", has been awarded this year's Lasker award(拉斯克獎). Lo's invention is widely used by over 60 countries due to its higher accuracy rate.
The Lasker award is viewed as among the most prestigious awards in the field of medicine after the Nobel Prize.
Lo and his team are currently developing a blood test which can detect various types of cancer. He encourages young people in Hong Kong to devote their effort to scientific research, saying "this award has proved that locally born Hong Kong scientists can also make an impact on the world".
What is Down's Syndrome?
Normally, a baby is born with 46 chromosomes, but a baby with Down's Syndrome has an extra chromosome. People with Down's syndrome usually have lifelong intellectual and learning disabilities.
