MEIJI RESTORATION (明治維新) in 1868 brought enormous changes to Japan in different perspectives, like political and social structure. Fukuzawa was the one who introduced Western ideas to Japan in order to increase Japanese "strength and independence".

banker who pulled Japan out of the Great Depression
TAKAHASHI had been the Governor of the Bank of Japan during 1911-1913, later served as the Prime Minister of Japan from 1921 to 1922. He is famous for adopting different measures to save Japan's finance.

investigate the plague in Hong Kong
YOU might not be familiar with his name, but you might have heard of the bubonic plague (鼠疫) in Hong Kong. In 1894, he was assigned by the Japanese government to aid British Hong Kong amid the bubonic plague. The set of banknotes featuring Kitasato will be issued in 2024.
