【明報專訊】We should not enter the area of the reservoir as it is managed by the Water Department. Entering the reservoir may contaminate our drinking water as well. When you are planning your hiking trip, you should take into account some factors like your fitness condition, the time required to finish the trip, the length of the route and the gradient of the slope.
Gear
You should bring a first-aid kit, a fully charged mobile phone for communication and calling for help, an umbrella or raincoat, a torch, a whistle, some snacks and adequate water with you. You should also consider carrying a mosquito repellent to prevent insect and mosquito bites.
Weather
Besides getting the appropriate equipment, it is also important to pay special attention to the weather report and forecast for the day. You should consider putting off or cancelling the event if inclement weather is forecasted. In case of thunderstorms, you should keep away from trees that are likely to be struck by lightning. You should also avoid hiking on days of very hot weather and high humidity.
Route
You need to familiarise yourself with the hiking route. Study the map and information about the route and plan the trip carefully to avoid getting lost or injured.
Emergency
If you get lost, you should retrace your steps instead of forcing yourself to walk further. In case of an emergency, you should call for help using the emergency helpline telephones installed along the route, dial 999 or the international emergency call number 112.
