Sakamoto Ryˆtma (1836 - 1867) is one of Japan's most beloved historical figures. He was a samurai and influential politician in the final era of traditional Japanese. He played an essential role in bringing an end to the strict social hierarchy and paving the way for the emergence of modern Japan.

He learned about the western world through reading and listening to detailed accounts. He started to dream of a modernised Japan, where there would no longer be social classes just as in the other countries.

In order to conceal his identity, he used another name while he was working in secret against the powerful military government. Despite being a warrior, he put forward his plan for political reform in peaceful ways such as by using his negotiation skills.

Sadly, he died at a young age of 31 due to assassination, unable to see the fruit of his efforts to modernise Japan.
