Dig Deeper：Food Truck Pilot Scheme

【明報專訊】The Food Truck Pilot Scheme was launched on 3 February, 2017, with the objective to promote Food truck as a tourism project. Running for almost five years, the government decided to end the scheme since the scheme has failed to achieve the policy objective. Before ending the scheme, the government made several attempts to assist the operators, such as exploring new operating venues, allowing food trucks to participate in self-identified events and relaxing operating restrictions.

◆When will the Pilot Scheme end?

1 June, 2022. The government has granted an extension for food truck operators to make arrangements accordingly. No backup plans will be provided for the operators, indicating that they are required to follow proper procedure to apply for an appropriate licence if they want to continue operating in other modes of the catering business.

◆How many food trucks are there?

15, but 3 of them have already withdrawn from the Scheme. In January 2022, among the remaining 12 food trucks, only 3 maintained relatively regular operation. The development was ''not satisfactory'', as described by Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development Edward Yau.

◆What was the revenue of the food trucks?

The gross revenue of food trucks?from February 2017 to February 2022 was $56.28 million
