Benjamin Franklin (around 1706 - 1790) was one of the founders of the United States but he is also well-known for being a scientist, an inventor, a writer and a politician. Although he did not receive a lot of formal education, he learned by himself from books.
When he grew older, he owned a newspaper publisher. Soon, he made a name for himself because of his essays in the newspaper.
Not only did he play an important role in establishing the country, but he also founded the first public library in the USA. As a scientist and an inventor, he made inventions and discoveries in the areas of electricity, light, etc.
