Talk of the town:Equal opportunities in HK
【明報專訊】7.1% of the total population in 2020 had one or more forms of disabilities, including hearing difficulty, restrictions in movement, mental illness, attention deficit or hyperactivity disorder, etc. Similar to all members of society, they are all entitled to different possibilities in life.
How to eliminate discrimination and promote equal opportunities?
The Equal Opportunities Commission(平機會)is responsible for the elimination of discrimination on the grounds of sex, marital status, pregnancy, disability, family status and race. It promotes equality of opportunities between men and women, between people with and without a disability, people of different races and irrespective of family status.
There are also relevant ordinances to criminalise these discriminatory behaviours. However, a study released in May 2022 by the HKU found that the current endeavour to eliminate discrimination was not enough. In terms of education, it suggested that we should start teaching the meaning of social inclusion from kindergartens and promote diversified education.
