Career:Lawyers
【明報專訊】What do they do?
You often see lawyers in TV dramas. However, there are some common stereotypes and misunderstandings of this profession. Some people may mistakenly think that only those speaking in court are lawyers. But in fact, lawyers are divided into two branches. Barristers (大律師) are those who give advice on litigations and make representations in the court, while solicitors (事務律師) are those who provide legal opinions directly for clients. No one can be a solicitor and a barrister at the same time.
How can I become a lawyer?
You need to put in some effort in order to be a lawyer. First and foremost, you need to hold a degree of Bachelor of Laws, Juris Doctor or any equivalent qualifications from universities. With those qualifications, you can apply to study for a Postgraduate Certificate in Laws (PCLL). After you have completed both the PCLL and two years' employment as a trainee solicitor or twelve months' pupillage, you can practice as a solicitor or barrister in Hong Kong. It sounds difficult, but nothing is impossible if you never give up!
TV drama: Suits
Suits (《金裝律師》) is a popular TV series depicting the daily routine of lawyers. Mike and Harvey are a winning team, but they hide a secret from everyone in the law firm, and sometimes they encounter difficult situations. Take a look at the TV drama, and you may learn something new about this profession!
