【明報專訊】Around the world, some bodies of water showcase fascinating natural phenomena that captivate visitors with their unique beauty. They have significant scientific importance in fields such as geography and biology, while also playing a vital role in their local ecosystems.

Tanzania - Lake Natron

Lake Natron in Tanzania is a hostile, toxic salt lake with extreme alkalinity (鹼度) and temperatures reaching up to 60℃. Despite these harsh conditions, it is home to 75% of the world's Lesser Flamingos, which have adapted to the toxic waters. Due to its chemical composition, animals that die in the lake become preserved as stone-like sculptures.

Peru - The Boiling River

The Boiling River is the hottest and only boiling river in the world, with temperatures often reaching around 93℃ and potentially up to the boiling point, making it impossible for anything to survive in it. Located in the Amazon rainforest, this unique thermal river is believed to be heated by the Earth's crust (地殼), not by volcanic activity.

Puerto Rico - Mosquito Bay

Mosquito Bay in Puerto Rico is renowned as the brightest bioluminescent (生物發光的) bay in the world. This stunning phenomenon occurs when microorganisms emit light when disturbed by movement. To enjoy this wonder responsibly, opt for eco-friendly tours, minimise splashing and limit light pollution to protect the ecosystem. The most eco-friendly way to experience this magical glow is by kayak, allowing tourists to glide through the glowing waters with minimal impact. (Picture C)
