【明報專訊】In response to concerns related to the effectiveness of the Chinese medicines in the anti-epidemic kit, the government reiterated that the medicines could be used to treat patients with mild and common symptoms.

Have you ever taken Chinese medicine when you are feeling unwell? Do you know anything about the regulations and development related to Chinese medicine? There are several regulations governing the circulation of Chinese medicines in Hong Kong.

As the Chinese Medicine Ordinance requires, all proprietary Chinese medicines must be registered before they can be sold, imported or possessed. For the import of medicines, one must obtain an import licence issued by the Department of Health as well. The government established a quality assurance system to identify Chinese medicines with good quality. The first Chinese medicine hospital is about to start its operation in 2025 as well.

''Lianhua Qingwen Jiaonang'' (連花清瘟膠囊) is approved in the Mainland as effective Chinese medicine against the pandemic, but the version of the medicines manufactured and sold in the Mainland are not registered in Hong Kong. Selling them in Hong Kong is illegal, and there were cases of arrest and prosecution in February 2022. However, the government exempted itself from importing that unregistered version of medicines donated by the Mainland in light of the pandemic situation.

“ MoMo: You can see the word ''GMP'' on the qualified proprietary Chinese medicines. GMP stands for ''Good Manufacturing Practice''. It is widely adopted by the drug manufacturing industry worldwide. ”
