Zhang Yiming(張一鳴), born in 1983, is a prominent Chinese Internet entrepreneur best known for founding ByteDance, the company behind TikTok and Douyin. Raised in Fujian, Zhang studied software engineering at Nankai University, where he developed a passion for technology. He was inspired to create TikTok after noticing a growing demand for personalised, easily consumable content, with people turning to smartphones for quick entertainment.
He launched Douyin in China in 2016, followed by TikTok's global debut in 2017. TikTok was the first platform to achieve massive global success in popularising short-form video content, even before Instagram's Reels and YouTube's Shorts.
