【明報專訊】We often see principal government officials on TV or in the newspaper. Some of them began their career path in public services as administrative officers. For example, Chief Executive Carrie Lam joined the government in 1980 as an administrative officer.
◆What do administrative officers do?
They primarily work as professional administrators who possess multiple skills and experience through working in different bureaux and departments. They may need to form policies that are closely related to the well-being of the society. On some occasions, they may even need to serve as the representatives of the government at the frontline.

◆What are the qualifications or qualities required?
It is important to keep abreast of current affairs since administrative officers assist in policymaking. They need to develop a thorough understanding of current affairs before they formulate feasible policies. Besides, it is necessary for candidates to hold at least a bachelor's degree and pass different tests before joining the government. A high level of language proficiency is also required. After all, it is quite a competitive post!
