【明報專訊】The Centre for Health Protection (衛生防護中心) of Hong Kong announced on August 25 the first case of Zika virus infection (寨卡病毒感染) had been confirmed. The Zika virus is mosquito-borne. According to the World Health Organization (世界衛生組織), researches have shown that it causes microcephaly (小頭症).
The case involves a 38-year-old woman who was in Saint Barthelemy in the Caribbeans (加勒比海法屬聖巴泰勒米島) between August 6 and August 20. She was bitten by mosquitoes. She had joint pain and red eyes after she had returned to Hong Kong. Having tested positive for the Zika virus, she stayed in an isolation ward at United Christian Hospital (基督教聯合醫院). Luckily the virus level she carried was low and there was next to no risk of social transmission.
