【明報專訊】AN archaeological project in the Lushan area in Henan (河南) has discovered 46 caves of the Old Stone Age (舊石器時代). One cave with an altitude of 576 metres is the main focus. The ''ceiling'' of the cave is as high as four metres, with an area of ?about 30 square metres. Archaeologists said that it can be compared with a ''luxury apartment'' in ancient times.

Fragmented animal fossils and stone tools were found, indicating that ancient humans dissected and smashed animals before consuming them.

Goodbye, fireflies

FIREFLIES are vulnerable to light. Oculogryphus chenghoiyanae (鄭凱甄怪眼螢), a new species named after Cheng Hoi-yan, a liver donor, was perhaps exterminated in the area due to the lights emitted by newly installed lampposts nearby. The authorities responded by saying that there had still been fireflies in the area recorded last year. An expert said he had been to the area more than ten times but had not no longer identified the species.

Fighting a giant

IN THE US, a congressman revealed that workers at Amazon, an e-commerce giant, had to urinate using plastic bottles. At first Amazon denied the claim but later admitted it. The incident came amid efforts by Amazon workers in Alabama (阿拉巴馬州) to unionise, which was opposed by Amazon. The motion was voted down by workers, who were worried about job security and suspicious about a union's use in seeking higher pay and benefits. Had they voted yes, they would have created Amazon's first labour union in America.
