“ MoMo: Hey, Eason! What're you doing? ”
“ Bill: Are you stealing water from the river? ”
“ Eason: I'm actually making my own salt. ”
“ MoMo: Salt? ”
“ Eason: Yes, I'm following in Gandhi's footsteps. He led his followers to make their own salt in order to protest against the British salt tax. ”
“ Dr Panda: But you should use sea water instead because river water only contains a little salt. ”

Mahatma Gandhi (1869 - 1948), was a political leader in British-ruled India. He organised non-violent protests to help India get independence from British rule. Therefore, he became the symbol of non-violence and is called the 'Father of the Nation'. His birthday is also a national holiday in India. He taught us the importance of peace as well as equality regardless of skin colour, religion and social class.
When he was working in South Africa, he experienced racial prejudice. Since then, he had started fighting for rights for Indians who lived in South Africa. After returning to India, he organised a few campaigns to fight for independence. For example, large groups of Indians refused to use British goods. Although he was put into prison for several times, he showed his perseverance by fasting. Finally, India gained independence.
