?A?The Taiwanese-American doctor is one of the scientists who first discovered that AIDS was caused by viral infection. He invented a cocktail therapy for the disease and TIME named him the Man of the Year in 1996.
?B?He is the Chair of Infectious Diseases of the Department of Microbiology of the University of Hong Kong. He was the first biologist to ascertain (in 2003) that SARS was caused by a coronavirus (冠狀病毒). His discovery was of great help in the development of the treatment for SARS.
?C?A Nobel laureate, the Chinese scientist has done extensive research about malaria (瘧疾), a mosquito-borne disease that has tortured many in southern Asia and Africa. Unlike other ethnic Chinese Nobel laureates, she has never received education outside China.
?D?After she had been with the Hong Kong government for 25 years, the former Director of Health was made Director General of the World Health Organisation in 2007. She was on the 2009 Forbes list of 100 Most Powerful Women.
