【明報專訊】Mark Zuckerberg (朱克伯格), a co-founder of Facebook, and Priscilla Chan, his wife, welcomed Maxima, their daughter, in late November, 2015. The new parents have pledged to give away in their lifetime 99% of their Facebook shares, currently worth about US$45 billion. They have done so to make the world a better place for the next generation.
"We will do our part to make this happen, not only because we love you, but also because we have a moral responsibility to all children in the next generation", Zuckerberg wrote in a letter to his daughter. The shares the couple are going to give away will go to the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative. The organisation focuses on curing diseases, promoting personalised learning and building strong communities.
Facebook is a social networking site founded by Zuckerberg, his roommates and another person on 4 February 2004. He was then at Harvard University. The amount of money Zuckerberg and his wife will donate exceeds the value of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, which was worth US$41.3 billion as of June 2015 and is now the largest foundation in the world.
