【明報專訊】A traditional circus includes various performers like trained animals, tightrope walkers and stunt-oriented artists (特技人). A contemporary circus performance combines traditional circus skills and theatrical techniques to tell a story or express a theme. It is usually staged in a theatre rather than a large outdoor tent. Cirque du Soleil (太陽劇團) is one of the most successful contemporary circus companies.
Cruelty to animals may be a problem with a traditional circus company, whose animals may be mistreated and forced to learn tricks. Condemned by animal welfare groups, animal acts appear less frequently in contemporary circus performances.
