【明報專訊】Many people keep domestic pets in their houses, particularly dogs and cats. It is always fun to play with your pets. If you were to keep a pet in your house, would you adopt or purchase from the pet shops?
◆How many households keep dogs or cats?
241,900 households. They represents 9.4% of all households in Hong Kong. A slightly higher proportion keep dogs (5.7%) rather than cats (4%). Do you have a pet at home?
◆For dog-keepers, how large is the household ?
Although the average household size of dog-keepers is 2.9, most dog-keepers have a household of five people and over!
◆How many pets does each owner keep?
10.6% of dog-keepers keep more than three dogs, 14.3% of cat-keepers keep more than three cats. Most households keep one dog or/and one cat only.
◆Adopt or purchase?
Some people advocate adopting instead of buying a pet because this can help fight puppy mills or kitten mills. Yet, most Hong Kong pet-keepers buy pets from pet shops or receive them as a gift from relatives or friends.
◆Tips
Regardless of where you received the pets, bear in mind that owning a pet is a massive responsibility. Never abandon a pet!
