【明報專訊】談英詩不能不談莎士比亞(William Shakespeare，1564-1616)。莎士比亞不但以劇作留名，還創作了很多精緻的十四行詩(sonnets)。Sonnet 18: Shall I compare thee to a summer's day?(《我可以把你比作夏天嗎？》)絕對是傳誦最廣的一首。
◆Sonnet 18 詩文
1＞ Shall I compare thee to a summer's day?
2＞ Thou art1 more lovely and more temperate:
3＞ Rough winds do shake the darling2 buds of May,
4＞ And summer's lease3 hath4 all too short a date;
5＞ Sometime too hot the eye of heaven5 shines,
6＞ And often is his gold complexion6 dimm'd;
7＞ And every fair from fair7 sometime declines,
8＞ By chance or nature's changing course untrimm'd8;
9＞ But thy eternal summer shall not fade,
10＞ Nor lose possession of that fair thou ow'st9;

◆大意
1＞ 我可以把你比作夏天嗎？
2＞ 你更可愛也更溫和宜人：
3＞ 烈風搖撼五月嬌豔的花蕊，
4＞ 夏天的租賃又是如此短暫；
5＞ 天上的眼睛有時照射太熱，
6＞ 它金黃的面貌也常常被遮擋；
7＞ 美好的事物終有一天衰敗，
8＞ 不敵命運和大自然的改變；
9＞ 但你是永無衰敗的夏日，
10＞ 你的美麗長存不朽；
11＞ 死神的黑影不能把你籠罩，
12＞ 你要在永恒的詩句裏變得茁壯；
13＞ 只要人能呼吸、眼睛能看，
14＞ 這首詩就會長存，為你帶來生命。
■註譯
1. Thou art：即「You are」。
2. darling：備受喜愛的。
3. lease：租賃。這裏是將每個季節比喻為對一年時光的租賃。
4. hath：即「has」。
5. eye of heaven：直譯是「天上的眼睛」，指太陽。
6. complexion：面色。比喻太陽的外貌。
7. every fair from fair：fair指「美好」。所有美好的事物。
8. untrimm'd：trim除了解「修剪」，也可解「調校船帆」，使船隻航行更順暢。這句將大自然無常的運行(nature's changing course)比喻為航道，指它因為船帆沒有調校而常常改變。
9. ow'st：既可是「own」(擁有)、也可是「owe」(欠下)的縮寫，前者指對方「擁有」美麗，後者強調對方的美麗是上天賜予。
10. brag：吹噓。
11. shade：陰影。
12. eternal lines to time：eternal是「永恒」；「lines to time」是按照節奏(time)寫成的一行一行的文字，即詩句。
13. this：即這首詩歌。
