Horizon:Yummy but stinky
【明報專訊】Are you a fan of durian or stinky tofu? The perception of smelliness in food varies widely based on cultural norms and personal preferences. Here, we explore a list of other foods often renowned for their strong odours. Do you have the courage to give them a try?
◆Sweden - Surstr?mming
Surstr?mming, which can be translated as ''sour fish'', is Sweden's renowned canned fermented fish. It originated in northern Sweden during the 16th century. Due to its pungent aroma similar to rotten eggs, it is sometimes referred to as ''the smelliest food in the world''. Despite its overwhelmingly strong smell, enthusiasts praise its unique acidic taste. It is typically enjoyed wrapped in buttered bread with potatoes and onion. Meanwhile, online challenges like the ''stinky fish challenge'' have attracted international attention.
◆Nigeria - Iru
Nigeria, an African country, boasts diverse cultures and culinary traditions. Among these, there is a regional specialty called Iru, which is fermented locust beans. The beans produce a pungent aroma, which some describe as resembling body odour or stinky feet. Iru is often used as a seasoning in stew and soup. Due to its potent smell and taste, only a small amount is needed to add flavour. Iru is also made into brown patties, which are enjoyed as a snack.
◆Belgium - Limburger
Limburger, a soft cow's milk cheese, is renowned for its potent aroma, often compared to that of rotten socks. The longer the cheese ferments, the stronger and spicier its taste becomes. It is commonly served with sliced raw onions and mustard atop a slice of bread. Attracted by its appearance, tourists may try it out of curiosity, only to quickly regret it. Although Limburger originated in Belgium, it gained popularity in Germany. Today, most Limburger is produced in Germany.
