Apple co-founder Steve Jobs once shared his view that everyone should learn programming. So, what is programming?

We have been using many computer programmes on a day-to-day basis. It is because computers, smartphones, tablet computers and video games rely upon programming. Robots, drones and spaceships are also programmed to perform specific tasks.

Programming is the development of software programmes such as websites or applications. These programmes help us complete tasks by recognising programming languages, which are particular languages that computers understand.

Writing instructions in these languages is called coding. Different programming languages specialise in different aspects. For instance, JavaScript is suitable for making websites while Python is great for artificial intelligence.

Research shows that children as young as 7 years of age can start learning programming and coding basics, which can help develop creativity, logical thinking and problem-solving skills. Would you give it a try?
