In order to obtain the funds for her trip to Africa, she worked very hard after studying in high school.

In Africa, she met scientist Louis Leakey who hired her as his assistant. In 1960, He sent her to live among chimpanzees in the jungle. The research project turned out to be the world's longest one as she lived there almost full-time until 1975.

Throughout the years, she has published a lot of articles and books. She also founded a charity which researches on chimpanzees and promotes environmental awareness.
