【明報專訊】Where do you get your haircut? Do you go to a salon? At a salon, hairdressers cut and style customers' hair. Do you want to become a hairdresser in the future?

What do hairdressers do?

Ahairdresser cuts people's hair and puts it into a style. The work includes washing, drying, cutting, dying and styling hair. A hairdresser uses different equipment and tools to straighten or perm people's hair. A hairdresser also gives advice to customers on their hair style and hair care.

A higher-ranking hairdresser is called a stylist. A stylist can get help from his/her assistants. A male hairdresser who serves only male customers is called a barber. Some stylists specialise in particular services. For example, a hair colour technician specialises in colouring hair.

How to be a hairdresser?

To start a career as a hairdresser, you may need to enroll in a professional training course or work under a senior stylist as an apprentice. You have to be creative and have a good sense of style as you will have to style someone's hair and give advice. Being sociable may help because every day you will meet people from different backgrounds. Working as a hairdresser can be fun but it is also tiring because you will have to be on your feet all day.
