Joan of Arc (1412 - 1431) is considered a national heroine of France. She became a military leader when she was just a teenager. She was born to a peasant family during wartime. At the age of 16, she decided that she would go forward to save her country and help the king to get back his throne.
During the Hundred Years' War, she led the army. Even though she was wounded, she did not give up. She inspired French soldiers with her courage and they finally defeated the English. However, during another war, she was captured and sold to the English. They wanted to kill her so they accused her of dressing as a man. She was put to death at a young age of 19. In 1920, the Catholic Church made her a saint.
