News feed:Burnt to the ground
【明報專訊】WENGDING (翁丁村), a village in Yunnan dubbed the ''last primitive tribe in China'', was engulfed in fire last month. The fire was completely extinguished later and no casualties were reported. However, this wooden village with a tribal history of around 400 years was almost burnt to the ground. There were 105 houses and only four were not burned. (photo.1-2)
Dire warning to air fryers
AMID the pandemic, air fryers (氣炸鍋) are popular, as they help cook various recipes often seen in fast food restaurants. Though needing less oil than traditional ovens, they still use high temperature and limited water to heat food, producing acrylamide (丙烯醯胺), a substance that has the potential to cause cancer. Using 12 models of such fryers to cook French fries, the Consumer Council found that six had exceeded the EU limit on the substance, one even having an amount of acrylamide 13 times higher than the limit!
Sexist remark
IN JAPAN, Yoshiro Mori (森喜朗) resigned and was replaced by Seiko Hashimoto (橋本聖子) (pictured), the Olympics minister, as president of the Tokyo Olympic organising committee. Mori, a former Prime Minister, caused controversies after commenting that women talked too much in meetings when the committee proposed to increase the number of female directors. The public accused him of sexism and demanded his resignation.
