Horizon : Unusual school subjects around the world

【明報專訊】Typically, students all over the world have similar school subjects to what their peers study in other countries. Nonetheless, some countries have gone beyond the norm to provide some special subjects. Below are some awesome ones which may surprise you.

Germany, Austria, Switzerland - Happiness

In Germany, Austria and Switzerland, Happiness is an individual subject being taught at 200 schools. At these schools, qualified teachers teach students about feeling positive about themselves, recognising their dreams, facing failures, etc. Through discussions and games, self-confidence and social skills are boosted. There are neither exams nor things to memorise for this subject.

Republic of Bashkortostan - Beekeeping

The Republic of Bashkortostan(巴什科爾托斯坦共和國), also known as Bashkiria, is located in Russia. Bashkir honey is recognised as one of the best in the world. In order to cultivate aspiring beekeepers, over 100 schools have their own apiaries to let schoolchildren learn how to care for bees, inspect hives and harvest honey. The curriculum can also promote attentiveness and patience in students.

Japan - Living Environment Studies

In Japan, a subject called Living Environment Studies has been mandatory for all Primary 1 and 2 students since 1992. For older students, some schools offer a similar subject called Nature Admiration. Through outdoor learning, students learn to appreciate the beauty of nature and protect the environment. Spending time in nature also helps students improve their aesthetic sense and calm their minds.
